Avenella is a small genus of grasses in the family Poaceae (order Poales), comprising two species widely distributed across temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere and beyond. The genus includes Avenella flexuosa (L.) Drejer — commonly known as wavy hair-grass — and Avenella foliosa (Hack.) Rivas Mart. et al.

The best-known member, Avenella flexuosa, is a tufted bunchgrass recognised by its wiry, needle-like leaves and delicate, arching panicles bearing silvery or purplish-brown florets on fine, wavy stalks — a habit that gives the plant its common name. Plants form tight, tussocky clumps typically 5–20 cm tall in a vegetative state, reaching up to 30 cm in flower.

The genus has a broad distribution spanning temperate Eurasia, North America, South America, and northwest Africa, with additional occurrences on tropical mountains in east-central Africa and Malesia. Species favour acidic, well-drained soils and are characteristic plants of heathlands, moors, dry grasslands, and the ground layer of birch and oak woodland.

Avenella has historically been treated within the larger genus Deschampsia, and some authorities continue to place Avenella flexuosa there as Deschampsia flexuosa; the two names remain in parallel use across different taxonomic frameworks.

Taxonomy Notes

Avenella has long been treated as part of the larger genus Deschampsia, and its sole widely recognised species, Avenella flexuosa, is still frequently listed as Deschampsia flexuosa (L.) Trin. in many floras and databases. GBIF accepts Avenella as a valid genus within Poaceae but records no authorship for the genus-level name. The circumscription and rank of Avenella versus Deschampsia remains a subject of ongoing taxonomic debate.

Distribution

Avenella species occur across temperate Eurasia, North America, South America, and northwest Africa, with the genus also reaching tropical mountain habitats in east-central Africa and Malesia. Avenella flexuosa is particularly widespread, growing on heathlands, moors, dry grasslands, and in birch and oak woodland, and tolerating elevations above 1,200 m. It is strongly calcifuge, favouring acidic, free-draining soils and avoiding chalk and limestone substrates.

Ecology

Avenella flexuosa is a characteristic species of acidic, nutrient-poor habitats including heathlands, upland moors, and dry grasslands. It is also an important component of the ground flora in birch and oak woodland. Its preference for free-draining, acidic soils and intolerance of calcareous substrates makes it a reliable indicator of acid soil conditions. The species persists at high elevations, having been recorded above 1,200 m.
