Avenula is a genus of grasses in the family Poaceae (order Poales), native to Eurasia. Although more than 100 names have been proposed for species, subspecies, varieties, and other infraspecific taxa within the genus, modern taxonomy recognises only a single accepted species: Avenula pubescens (Huds.) Dumort., commonly known as downy oat-grass or downy alpine oatgrass. Many names formerly attributed to Avenula have been transferred to the closely related genera Helictochloa, Helictotrichon, and Tricholemma, reflecting ongoing revisions of the oat-grass group within Poaceae.
Avenula pubescens is distributed across Europe and Asia, ranging from Iceland and Portugal in the west to Xinjiang, Mongolia, and Siberia in the east. The species has also become naturalized in scattered locations in North America, including the US states of Connecticut, Delaware, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Vermont, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan.
Distribution
Avenula is native to a broad Eurasian belt stretching from Iceland and Portugal east to Xinjiang, Mongolia, and Siberia. The sole accepted species, Avenula pubescens, has also naturalized in parts of northeastern and midwestern North America.
Taxonomy Notes
Avenula has undergone significant taxonomic revision; the vast majority of names once assigned to the genus are now treated as synonyms, with former members relocated to the genera Helictochloa, Helictotrichon, and Tricholemma. GBIF currently recognises the genus within the family Poaceae, order Poales.
