Bebbia is a monotypic genus of aromatic shrubs in the family Asteraceae, commonly known as sweetbush. It contains a single species, Bebbia juncea, which is native to the warm desert and semi-arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Within the United States, the genus is found in California, Nevada, Arizona, southwestern Utah, southwestern New Mexico, and extreme western Texas (El Paso County). In Mexico it occurs in Sonora, Baja California, and Baja California Sur.

Plants of this genus are slender, rush-like shrubs with aromatic foliage. They produce abundant small yellow discoid flower heads — a characteristic feature of many members of the tribe Heliantheae within Asteraceae. The genus is associated with Creosote Bush Scrub plant communities, placing it firmly in the Sonoran and Mojave desert zones. Three varieties of Bebbia juncea are currently accepted: var. juncea, var. aspera Greene, and var. atriplicifolia (A.Gray) I.M.Johnst.

Distribution

Bebbia juncea, the sole species of the genus, is native to the southwestern United States — including California, Nevada, Arizona, southwestern Utah, southwestern New Mexico, and extreme western Texas — and to the Mexican states of Sonora, Baja California, and Baja California Sur. In California it is associated with Creosote Bush Scrub communities in the desert regions of the south and east.

Ecology

Bebbia grows in Creosote Bush Scrub plant communities, typical of the Sonoran and Mojave desert zones. Its shrubby, rush-like growth form and aromatic foliage are adaptations suited to arid, sun-exposed desert washes and slopes.
