Berardia is a monotypic genus of flowering plants belonging to the tribe Cardueae within the family Asteraceae (order Asterales). It contains a single species, Berardia lanuginosa (Lam.) Fiori — also widely known under the older name Berardia subacaulis Vill. — a perennial herbaceous plant endemic to the Alps.

The plant is characterised by a tomentose, greyish appearance with dense woolly hairs (lanuginose) covering its stems and leaves, an adaptation to the harsh high-altitude environment it inhabits. It is hermaphrodite in reproduction. As an alpine endemic, it is found from the subalpine zone upward into the alpine and nival stages, growing from the treeline to the snowline.

Berardia is of conservation interest in parts of its range: it is subject to a national protection order in France (arrêté de protection sur l'ensemble du territoire national français). In Switzerland it has been documented but carries no national priority or cantonal protection status according to the Swiss Checklist 2017.

Etymology

The genus name Berardia was given in honour of a botanist named Bérard; the species epithet lanuginosa derives from the Latin lanuginosus ("woolly" or "downy"), referring to the dense tomentose covering of the plant. The older epithet subacaulis (from Latin "almost stemless") describes the plant's near-acaulescent habit.

Distribution

Berardia is an alpine endemic confined to the Alps mountain range. It grows from the upper subalpine zone through the alpine stage to the nival zone (above the treeline and into snowfield margins). Its range includes France and Switzerland; it is under national protection in France.

Ecology

Berardia lanuginosa occupies high-altitude habitats from the subalpine to nival stages of the Alps, broadly from the upper limit of coniferous forests to the snowline. Its dense woolly indumentum is a xeromorphic and thermoregulatory adaptation to intense solar radiation, low temperatures, and wind exposure typical of alpine environments.

Conservation

In France, Berardia lanuginosa is protected under a national decree (arrêté de protection) covering the entire national territory. In Switzerland, it is not listed as a national priority species and carries no cantonal or national protection status per the Swiss Checklist 2017 and InfoFlora. It is not listed on the IUCN global Red List of threatened species.

Taxonomy Notes

The species has been published under two names: Berardia subacaulis Vill. (the name used in Flora alpina 2004 and SISF/ISFS 2) and Berardia lanuginosa (Lam.) Fiori, which is the currently accepted name in the Swiss Checklist 2017. The genus belongs to tribe Cardueae (thistles and allies) in Asteraceae. GBIF records two descendants under the genus key, reflecting this nomenclatural duality rather than two distinct species.
