Bergeranthus is a genus of succulent flowering plants in the family Aizoaceae, placed within the order Caryophyllales. It was described by the German botanist Gustav Schwantes in 1926, originally published in Zeitschrift für Sukkulentenkunde. The genus belongs to the large and ecologically diverse family Aizoaceae — commonly known as the ice plant or fig-marigold family — which is centered on the summer-dry regions of southern Africa.

The genus is endemic to the Cape Provinces of South Africa, with records concentrated in the southern and southeastern regions. Like other members of the Aizoaceae, species of Bergeranthus are low-growing succulents adapted to arid and semi-arid conditions, typically producing yellow, daisy-like flowers that open in the afternoon or evening. The name Bergeranthus vespertinus ("of the evening") hints at the crepuscular flowering habit noted in at least one species.

Ten species are currently accepted, including Bergeranthus multiceps, Bergeranthus vespertinus, Bergeranthus scapiger, Bergeranthus concavus, Bergeranthus longisepalus, Bergeranthus nanus, Bergeranthus albomarginatus, Bergeranthus katbergensis, Bergeranthus leightoniae, and Bergeranthus addoensis. Several species were described by Louise Bolus and others were transferred to the genus by Schwantes from earlier placements.

Etymology

The genus name Bergeranthus honours the German botanist and succulent specialist Alwin Berger (1871–1931), combined with the Greek anthos (flower). The genus was formally described by Gustav Schwantes in 1926.

Distribution

Bergeranthus is endemic to South Africa, restricted to the southern and southeastern Cape Provinces. GBIF occurrence data confirm the overwhelming majority of records (roughly 75%) originate from South Africa, with remaining records attributable to herbarium specimens held in European institutions.

Cultivation

Species of Bergeranthus are compact succulents suited to well-drained, gritty or sandy soils in full sun. As members of the Aizoaceae from the Cape winter-rainfall and transitional zones, they tolerate mild frost but require a dry dormancy in summer. They are grown as ornamentals in rock gardens and succulent collections in temperate climates.
