Boenninghausenia is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the family Rutaceae, within the order Sapindales. It contains a single species, Boenninghausenia albiflora, a herbaceous perennial native to a wide arc of Asia — from Pakistan and the eastern Himalayan region (Nepal, Bhutan, Kashmir, and India) eastward through Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, northern Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines) and into East Asia (China and Japan). The genus belongs to the rue family (Rutaceae), which also includes economically important plants such as citrus and rue (Ruta). Boenninghausenia albiflora is recognized by its white flowers — the species epithet albiflora means "white-flowered" in Latin — and its aromatic foliage characteristic of the Rutaceae. Two varieties are currently accepted within the species: the nominate var. albiflora and var. japonica, the latter recognized from Japan.
Etymology
The genus name Boenninghausenia commemorates Clemens Maria Franz von Boenninghausen (1785–1864), a German jurist and botanist. The species epithet albiflora is Latin for "white-flowered," reflecting the white blooms of the plant.
Distribution
Boenninghausenia albiflora has a broad distribution across Asia, ranging from Pakistan, Kashmir, Nepal, Bhutan, and India in the west, through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and northern Vietnam in Southeast Asia, to Indonesia, the Philippines, China, and Japan in the east. Its range spans tropical to warm-temperate montane zones.
Taxonomy Notes
Boenninghausenia is a monotypic genus — it contains only one species, B. albiflora — placed in the family Rutaceae, order Sapindales. Two infraspecific taxa are accepted: var. albiflora (the nominate variety) and var. japonica (Nakai ex Makino & Nemoto) S.Suzuki ex H.Ohba, the latter distinguished from the Japanese populations.
