Bombycilaena is a small genus of annual woolly herbs in the family Asteraceae (the daisy family), order Asterales. The genus was formally described by the botanist Smoljaninova in 1955, transferring it from an earlier circumscription by de Candolle — hence the authorship (DC.) Smoljan. Plants in this genus are characteristically covered in dense woolly or cottony hairs, a trait reflected in the genus name. The flower heads are small and inconspicuous, typical of the tribe Gnaphalieae to which Bombycilaena belongs within the Asteraceae.

The genus comprises a handful of species distributed across the Mediterranean Basin, southwestern Asia, and, disjunctly, western North America. The primary species are Bombycilaena erecta, found across Europe and southwest Asia from Portugal and Morocco to Ukraine and Afghanistan; Bombycilaena discolor, ranging through the Mediterranean and southwest Asia from Spain and Morocco to Iran; and Bombycilaena californica, native to California, Oregon, and Baja California. These plants typically inhabit dry, open, and disturbed habitats such as rocky slopes, grasslands, and roadsides.

Etymology

The name Bombycilaena derives from the Greek bombyx (silkworm or silk) and laena (cloak or mantle), referring to the dense, silky-woolly indumentum that covers the plants. The genus was originally circumscribed by de Candolle and later formally transferred to its current placement by Smoljaninova in 1955.

Distribution

Bombycilaena is native to Europe, North Africa, southwestern Asia, and western North America. The European and Asian species (B. erecta and B. discolor) range across the Mediterranean Basin — including France, Italy, Spain, Greece, and North Africa — east through the Caucasus, Crimea, and into Iran and Afghanistan. Bombycilaena californica represents a disjunct western North American element, occurring in California, Oregon, and Baja California.

Ecology

Species of Bombycilaena are annual herbs of dry, open, and disturbed habitats, including rocky slopes, thin-soiled grasslands, and roadsides. Their dense woolly covering is an adaptation to arid and semi-arid Mediterranean-climate conditions.

Taxonomy Notes

The genus was originally placed by de Candolle and subsequently revised by Smoljaninova, who established the current combination (DC.) Smoljan. in 1955 (published in Notulae Systematicae ex Herbario Instituti Botanici Academiae Scientiarum U.R.S.S. 17: 448). It belongs to the tribe Gnaphalieae within Asteraceae. GBIF recognises 6 descendant taxa under the backbone key 7583395.
