Borzicactus is a genus of cacti in the family Cactaceae (order Caryophyllales), native to the Andean regions of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. The genus was described by the Italian botanist Vincenzo Riccobono in 1909 and named in honor of Antonino Borzì, who served as Curator of the Botanical Gardens in Palermo, Italy.

Plants in the genus are small to medium-sized, typically reaching up to 30 cm in height and 6 cm in diameter, with cylindrical or tubular stems that are often bluish-green. The stems may grow singly or in clusters, and some species display characteristically twisted or coiled forms. Spirally arranged spines of varying lengths and colors cover the stems. The flowers are large and colorful, occurring in shades of pink, red, yellow, white, or orange; they bloom primarily in summer, remaining open during the day and attracting insect pollinators. The fruit is a small, spherical berry containing numerous seeds.

A notable biological trait of Borzicactus is its propensity to hybridize with closely related genera such as Echinopsis and Lobivia, a result of their shared evolutionary heritage within Cactaceae. This has given rise to numerous cultivated hybrids that blend traits from both parents. The genus comprises around 18 accepted taxa and is popular among cactus collectors for its ornamental appeal and adaptability to diverse growing conditions.

Etymology

The genus name Borzicactus honors Antonino Borzì, who served as Curator of the Botanical Gardens in Palermo, Italy in the early 20th century. The genus was formally described by Italian botanist Vincenzo Riccobono in 1909.

Distribution

Borzicactus is native to the Andean highlands of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, where species grow in the montane and high-altitude environments characteristic of the region.

Taxonomy Notes
