Bryoandersonia H.Rob. is a monotypic genus of pleurocarpous mosses belonging to the family Brachytheciaceae within the order Hypnales (class Bryopsida, phylum Bryophyta). The genus contains a single accepted species, Bryoandersonia illecebra (Hedw.) H.Rob., which was circumscribed in its current form by Harold E. Robinson in his 1963 generic revision of North American Brachytheciaceae, published in The Bryologist.

The species was originally described by Johann Hedwig as Hypnum illecebrum and has passed through numerous genera over the course of its taxonomic history, bearing names in Arrhenopterum, Cirriphyllum, Eurhynchium, Myurium, and Plagiothecium before being placed in its own monotypic genus. As a pleurocarpous moss, Bryoandersonia illecebra produces branches and sporophytes laterally from the stem rather than only at the tip, forming spreading or creeping mats characteristic of the Hypnales.

Bryoandersonia illecebra is predominantly a plant of eastern North America, with the overwhelming majority of georeferenced occurrence records from the United States and Canada. It grows in moist, shaded habitats — documented on exposed roots of Rhododendron beside rivers in Appalachian-Blue Ridge temperate broadleaf forest at mid-elevations (around 750 m). European records exist but are sparse, and the genus is regarded as primarily North American in distribution.

Etymology

The genus name Bryoandersonia honours a person with the surname Anderson — following the convention of bryological genus names compounded from the Greek bryon (moss) with a personal name. The species epithet illecebra is Latin for "allurement" or "charm", a term used historically in botanical nomenclature. The combination Bryoandersonia H.Rob. was established by Harold E. Robinson (1963).

Distribution

Bryoandersonia illecebra is primarily a North American species, with GBIF occurrence records strongly concentrated in the United States (over 8,100 records) and Canada (approximately 75 records). Within the USA it has been documented across eastern states including Vermont and North Carolina, growing in Appalachian temperate broadleaf forest habitats. A small number of records from western Europe (Spain, France, United Kingdom, Greece, Switzerland, Germany) exist but represent a minor part of the species' range.

Ecology

Bryoandersonia illecebra grows in moist, shaded habitats in temperate broadleaf forest. One documented station is on exposed roots of Rhododendron beside a river in Appalachian-Blue Ridge forest in the Nantahala National Forest, North Carolina, at approximately 750 m elevation. As a pleurocarpous moss it forms spreading mats over soil, roots, and other substrates in humid forest understory conditions.

Taxonomy Notes

Bryoandersonia is monotypic, containing only B. illecebra (Hedw.) H.Rob. The basionym is Hypnum illecebrum Hedw. Numerous combinations have been made in other genera: Arrhenopterum illecebrum (Hedw.) Steud., Cirriphyllum illecebrum (Hedw.) L.F.Koch, Eurhynchium boscii (Schwägr.) A.Jaeger, Hypnum boscii Schwägr., Myurium boscii (Schwägr.) Kindb., and Plagiothecium boscii (Schwägr.) Schimp. The genus is placed in family Brachytheciaceae, order Hypnales, per GBIF and NCBI Taxonomy.
