Burchardia is a small genus of herbaceous flowering plants in the family Colchicaceae, order Liliales, described by the Scottish botanist Robert Brown. The genus is entirely endemic to Australia, with six recognised species. Five of these — Burchardia bairdiae, B. congesta, B. monantha, B. multiflora, and B. rosea — are restricted to Western Australia, while the sixth, Burchardia umbellata (commonly known as milkmaids), has a broader distribution extending through Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland.

Members of the genus are low-growing perennial herbs that produce delicate white to pinkish flowers typically borne in umbel-like clusters. Burchardia umbellata is the most widespread and best-known representative of the genus, recognisable by its star-shaped white flowers with a characteristic pinkish centre.

Burchardia belongs to Colchicaceae, a family that also includes the autumn crocuses (Colchicum) and the widely cultivated glory lily (Gloriosa). The family is notable for alkaloid-rich chemistry, and plants in this group may be toxic if ingested.

Etymology

The genus Burchardia was named in honour of Johann Heinrich Burkhardt, an 18th-century German botanist. The name was established by Robert Brown in his foundational work on Australian flora.

Distribution

Burchardia is entirely endemic to Australia. Five of its six species are confined to Western Australia, where they occur in the Southwest Australian Floristic Region, one of the world's recognised biodiversity hotspots. The sixth species, B. umbellata, extends across south-eastern and eastern Australia, including Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland.

Taxonomy Notes

Burchardia R.Br. is the accepted botanical name for this genus (authorship Robert Brown), placed in the family Colchicaceae within the order Liliales. Two other genera were historically published under the same name — Burchardia Neck. (Myrtaceae) and Burchardia Duhamel (Lamiaceae) — but both are treated as nomenclatural synonyms or invalid names; the Colchicaceae genus has priority as the accepted usage.
