Calliarthron is a genus of coralline red algae in the family Corallinaceae (order Corallinales, class Florideophyceae, phylum Rhodophyta), described by Manza in 1937. It belongs to the "articulated" corallines — algae whose calcified thallus is built from rigid segments (intergenicula) separated by flexible, uncalcified joints (genicula) — and is considered similar to the related genus Bossiella.
Thalli are thalloid and crustose in overall form and can reach around 30 cm in size. The genicula begin their growth calcified, then decalcify as they mature; once decalcified they elongate and subsequently thicken through a process resembling xylem formation in vascular plants, producing secondary cell walls. Unusually for an alga, Calliarthron contains lignin and forms these secondary cell walls, traits otherwise associated with vascular land plants. The flexible genicula allow the thallus to bend with wave surge rather than fracture, an adaptation to its rocky intertidal habitat. The organisms lack secondary pit connections between cells. Reproduction occurs via conceptacles, which produce tetraspores, dispores, and carpospores.
Species placement is not fully settled across sources: Wikipedia recognises two species (Calliarthron tuberculosum and C. cheilosporioides), while the GBIF backbone lists four accepted species, additionally including C. antiquum and C. regenerens. Occurrence records are concentrated along the Pacific coast of North America (chiefly the United States and Canada), with smaller numbers of records reported from Australia, Japan, and Mexico, consistent with a primarily Pacific intertidal distribution.
