Carduncellus is a genus of thistle-like flowering plants in the tribe Cardueae, family Asteraceae (order Asterales). The genus is native to the western Mediterranean basin and surrounding regions, with species distributed across Italy, Spain, southern France (Provence), Liguria, and North Africa (Algeria). Plants in this genus are herbaceous perennials or small shrubs with spiny foliage and capitulum (composite flower heads) typical of the thistle alliance. The taxonomy of Carduncellus remains unsettled: it is part of a species complex with the closely related genus Carthamus (which includes safflower, Carthamus tinctorius), and the boundaries between the two genera are not firmly established. Some authorities consider Carduncellus synonymous with Carthamus, while others recognise it as a distinct genus of approximately 4–15 species depending on the taxonomic treatment. Accepted species include Carduncellus coeruleus (Italy), C. hispanicus (Spain), C. mairei (Algeria), and C. monspelliensium (southern France and Liguria), along with several others such as C. lucens, C. plumosus, and C. reboudianus.
Etymology
The genus name Carduncellus is a diminutive form derived from the Latin carduus (thistle), with the suffix -ellus meaning "little" — literally "little thistle." The name reflects the morphological similarity of these plants to true thistles (Carduus), though they are placed in the tribe Cardueae rather than being direct relatives of Carduus sensu stricto.
Distribution
Carduncellus is native to the western Mediterranean region. The genus ranges across the coastal and inland areas of the Mediterranean basin, with recorded species in Italy (Carduncellus coeruleus / C. caeruleus), Spain (C. hispanicus), Algeria (C. mairei), and the Provence region of southern France extending into Liguria (C. monspelliensium). The genus is restricted to the western Mediterranean floristic region and does not extend into the eastern Mediterranean.
Taxonomy
The taxonomic status of Carduncellus is unresolved. The genus belongs to the tribe Cardueae within Asteraceae and is closely related to Carthamus — the genus that includes cultivated safflower (Carthamus tinctorius). The two genera form a species complex, and the boundaries between them have not been definitively established. While some sources accept Carduncellus as a distinct genus (with 4–15 species), others treat it as synonymous with Carthamus. This taxonomic ambiguity is reflected in GBIF, where two separate accepted genus keys exist for Carduncellus: one narrow concept (key 315488449, 1 descendant) and one broader concept (key 103349431, 15 descendants), and there is no universally accepted authorship recorded for the genus.
