Caryodendron is a genus of dioecious, evergreen trees in the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae, order Malpighiales), first described by German botanist Hermann Karsten in 1860. The genus is native to Central and South America, with its centre of diversity in the Orinoco and Amazon river drainage basins of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil.
The most notable species is Caryodendron orinocense — the cacay, inchi, or orinoconut tree — which can reach 30–40 metres in the wild. Its trunk is straight and cylindrical with smooth bark that sheds in laminar plates, and it has a dense, leafy crown of simple, alternate, elliptical leaves 12–25 cm long. The trees are dioecious: male inflorescences are terminal racemes of small greenish petal-less flowers (2.5–3.5 mm), while female inflorescences are terminal ears. The fruit is a woody, oval capsule 3.2–4.5 cm in diameter containing three edible oil-rich nuts.
The genus name Caryodendron derives from the Greek káryon ("nut") and déndron ("tree"), reflecting its economically valuable nuts.
Etymology
The genus name Caryodendron derives from the ancient Greek words káryon (κάρυον), meaning "nut", and déndron (δένδρον), meaning "tree" — literally "nut tree." The name was assigned by German botanist Hermann Karsten upon describing the genus in 1860. The type species epithet orinocense refers to the Orinoco River region of South America where the plant was first identified.
Distribution
Caryodendron is native to Central America and South America, with species distributed from Costa Rica and Panama south through Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. The genus is concentrated in the drainage basins of the Orinoco and Amazon rivers in northwestern South America. GBIF records acknowledge only C. orinocense as a recognized descendant, making the full geographic scope of the genus uncertain under current taxonomic treatments.
Ecology
The most studied species, C. orinocense, grows in the transition zone between tropical moist and tropical wet forest, in areas receiving 2,000–5,000 mm of annual precipitation. It prefers well-drained, non-flooded terrains and tolerates moderate short-term drought but not prolonged dry periods or permanent waterlogging. It thrives in warm climates (22–28 °C) with high relative humidity (70–90%) at altitudes from sea level to 2,300 metres. The species adapts to fertile alluvial soils as well as acidic, nutrient-poor ultisols and oxisols. Cacay trees attract bees through nectar excreted from their leaves.
Cultivation
Cacay (C. orinocense) is grown in plantations and agroforestry systems. Young trees grow slowly and benefit from moderate shade; they are typically raised in nursery bags for about one year until reaching 50 cm. Adult trees are heliophytic but tolerate partial shade. Trees begin fruiting at 4–7 years of age; a 10-year-old tree can yield 100–250 kg of nuts annually, with exceptional individuals producing up to 800 kg. Ripe fruits fall naturally when physiologically mature. In agroforestry, cacay is interplanted with fast-growing shade-providing crops or living groundcovers such as kudzu.
Conservation
Caryodendron orinocense has been identified as a valuable species for ecological restoration in the Eastern Plains (Llanos Orientales) region of Colombia. Plantings of cacay and other native trees help control invasive exotic grasses such as Brachiaria humidicola and support ecosystem conservation and reforestation efforts in degraded savanna areas. The species is not listed as threatened on a global scale.
Propagation
Under natural conditions, cacay reproduces sexually: seeds germinate readily on the ground within one to two weeks of falling. The seeds are recalcitrant, losing viability rapidly in storage — they tolerate at most eight days of storage, ideally at 12–13 °C. In farming, grafting is the preferred vegetative propagation method and is widely used. Propagation by stem cuttings does not produce satisfactory results; even when callus tissue forms, cuttings fail to develop roots or shoots.
Cultural Uses
The genus is economically significant primarily for the oil and nuts of C. orinocense. Cacay oil comprises 40–60% of the nut's weight and is exceptionally rich in linoleic acid (71–75%), an essential omega-6 fatty acid — a concentration higher than soybean, corn, sesame, peanut, coconut, olive, and palm oils. The oil is used in cosmetics (soaps, sunscreens, skincare creams) and as a direct-consumption edible oil. The nuts themselves have a pleasant peanut-like flavour and are eaten raw, toasted, fried, or boiled; they are also processed into cakes, turrón, beverages, and flour. The press cake remaining after oil extraction is 43–46% protein and serves as cattle feed. The wood is suitable for general woodworking, firewood, and charcoal production.
Taxonomy Notes
Caryodendron was first described by Hermann Karsten in Florae Columbiae (1860), with C. orinocense designated as the type species. The number of accepted species is disputed: English Wikipedia lists four (C. amazonicum, C. angustifolium, C. janeirense, C. orinocense), while Spanish Wikipedia also lists four but replaces C. janeirense with C. grandifolium. GBIF, in contrast, recognizes only one direct descendant species — C. orinocense — suggesting that the other names may be treated as synonyms or unresolved under GBIF's taxonomic backbone. No formal generic authorship is recorded in GBIF.
History
The genus Caryodendron was established in 1860 by the German botanist Gustav Karl Wilhelm Hermann Karsten, who published the description in Florae Columbiae terraumque adjacentium specimina selecta in peregrinatione duodecim annorum observata (volume 1, page 91), a work documenting his twelve-year botanical expedition in Colombia. The type species, C. orinocense, had been individually described by Karsten two years earlier in 1858.
