Ceratocephala is a genus of small annual herbs in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae, order Ranunculales). The plants are low-growing, typically reaching only 1–4 inches tall, with hairy, somewhat dissected leaves and small, dull yellow flowers borne on short stalks. The most distinctive feature is the cluster of hard, spiny achenes (fruits) — the "burs" that give the common name "bur buttercups." Each achene bears a persistent, elongated, horn-like beak, forming the characteristically horned fruiting head from which the genus takes its name. Like other Ranunculaceae, the plants contain toxic compounds and are considered poisonous to livestock and humans.

The genus is sometimes treated as a segregate of Ranunculus or included within it, depending on the taxonomic authority; this has led to multiple scientific names for the same plants. The most widespread species is Ceratocephala testiculata (syn. C. orthoceras, Ranunculus testiculatus), commonly known as bur buttercup or curveseed butterwort. In its introduced range in western North America, it is an early-spring ephemeral that flowers shortly after snowmelt in sagebrush habitats, completing its life cycle before summer drought sets in. Large populations are a reliable indicator of excessive soil disturbance, and the species is considered invasive across much of the northern and western United States.

Etymology

The genus name Ceratocephala derives from the Greek words keras (κέρας, "horn") and kephalē (κεφαλή, "head"), referring to the horn-like projections on the clustered achene heads that characterize the genus. The common name "bur buttercup" reflects the spiny, bur-like fruits and the plants' placement in the buttercup family.

Distribution

Ceratocephala is native to Eurasia and the Mediterranean region. The genus has been widely introduced elsewhere, most notably in western North America, where C. testiculata is considered an invasive species across the northern and western United States, particularly in sagebrush steppe and disturbed sites. In its native range, it occurs across southern and eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia, extending into China.

Ecology

Ceratocephala species are early-spring ephemeral annuals. In the sagebrush country of western North America, C. testiculata is among the first plants to flower after the snow melts. Large populations typically indicate excessive soil disturbance. The plants complete their life cycle quickly before summer drought sets in — a strategy well adapted to both their native Mediterranean and Eurasian steppe habitats and their invaded sagebrush range.

Taxonomy Notes

Ceratocephala has an unsettled taxonomic status. Some authorities treat it as a distinct genus within Ranunculaceae, while others (particularly treatments following a broader Ranunculus) include it within Ranunculus. The most widespread species, C. testiculata, is also known as Ranunculus testiculatus. Wikipedia lists Ceratocephala orthoceras (Ranunculus orthoceras) as a synonym of C. testiculata, though some floras maintain them as separate species. GBIF records only one accepted species in its primary backbone, reflecting a very narrow circumscription.
