Ceratopetalum is a genus of trees and shrubs in the family Cunoniaceae (order Oxalidales). It comprises nine recognised extant species, most of which are native to the rainforests and wet sclerophyll forests of eastern Australia, with one species extending to New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago. The genus was established by James Edward Smith in 1793.
Plants are glabrous, with opposite, decussate leaves that are either simple or trifoliolate, with paired interpetiolar stipules that fall early. Inflorescences are terminal, cymose, and much branched. Flowers are bisexual, bearing 4–5 sepals that persist and conspicuously enlarge after flowering; petals are small or absent (the exception being C. gummiferum, which has petals). Stamens number 10, arranged in two perigynous whorls, with the connective of each anther produced into a recurved appendage. The ovary is half-inferior and 2-locular. The fruit is a small, 1-seeded nut surrounded by the enlarged, persistent calyx, which in some species becomes brightly coloured — most famously in C. gummiferum, the New South Wales Christmas bush, whose sepals turn vivid pink to red around Christmas time.
Fossil evidence shows the genus once had a much wider distribution, with Eocene records from both North and South America as well as South Australia and New South Wales.
Distribution
The genus Ceratopetalum is native to eastern Australia and New Guinea. Eight species occur in Australia across three disjunct regions: eastern New South Wales and southeast Queensland (C. apetalum, C. gummiferum), highland areas of northeast Queensland (six species), and one species (C. tetrapterum) in New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago. Within Australia, five of the six species are endemic. All species grow in rainforest, with some (notably C. gummiferum) also inhabiting wet sclerophyll forest. Fossil evidence indicates the genus once ranged into the Americas during the Eocene.
Ecology
Ceratopetalum species are trees or large shrubs of rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest. The current diversity in northeast Queensland is thought to have arisen through allopatric speciation during the last glacial cycle (around 18,000 years before present), when suitable habitat contracted to isolated mountain peaks where higher rainfall persisted. Habitat contraction and subsequent isolation are believed to have driven the radiation of six species in this region.
Cultivation
The most widely cultivated species is Ceratopetalum gummiferum, the New South Wales Christmas bush, valued for its sepals that turn bright red-pink around Christmas. In cultivation it typically reaches about 6 metres in height. Propagation is by seed or cuttings, with cuttings preferred to maintain desirable colour forms. Well-drained soil is essential, as root-rot fungus causes dieback in poorly drained conditions. The psyllid Cerotrioza nigromacula is a significant pest, causing leaf curling and blackening of foliage from sooty mould; severe infestations can stunt growth.
Taxonomy
The genus Ceratopetalum was established by English botanist James Edward Smith in his 1793 work A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland, with C. gummiferum as the first described species and type of the genus. It is placed in the tribe Schizomerieae within the family Cunoniaceae (order Oxalidales), alongside the related genera Schizomeria, Anodopetalum, and Platylophus.
Cultural Uses
Ceratopetalum gummiferum is known as the New South Wales Christmas bush and is widely cultivated as an ornamental in Australia, where its sepals enlarge and turn vivid pink to red during the Christmas season. Some species also produce useful timber.
Fossil History
Fossil records indicate that Ceratopetalum was once far more widespread than its present-day Australian–New Guinean distribution. Eocene fossils have been found in South Australia (†C. maslinensis), New South Wales (†C. wilkinsonii), South America (†C. edgardoromeroi), and North America (†C. suciensis). Miocene fossils (†C. westermannii) are also recorded from New South Wales, showing a long history in the Australian region even as the genus contracted from the Americas.
