Chiococca is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae (order Gentianales). It was named by Patrick Browne in 1756 and currently comprises about 23 accepted species. The genus is placed in the tribe Chiococceae and is most closely related to Bikkia.
The type species is Chiococca alba, a widespread plant ranging naturally from Florida and Texas through Mexico, Central America, and much of South America to Paraguay, as well as throughout the West Indies. It is also cultivated as an ornamental. The genus as a whole is native to the warmer regions of the Americas, including Florida, Texas, Mexico, Central America, much of South America, the West Indies, and the Pacific islands of Galápagos and Fernando de Noronha.
The generic name Chiococca comes from the Greek words for "snow" (χιών, chion) and "berry" (κόκκος, kokkos), likely referring to the white fruits of some species. Individual species range from widespread (C. alba) to narrow endemics, such as Chiococca cubensis restricted to Cuba and Chiococca insularis endemic to Fernando de Noronha off the coast of Brazil. Other species are distributed across Mexico, Central America, Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil, and the Caribbean.
