Chlorocardium is a genus of flowering plants in the laurel family (Lauraceae, order Laurales), native to northern South America. It contains three species — C. rodiei, C. esmeraldense, and C. venenosum — and was described by Rohwer, H.G. Richt. & van der Werff. The name means "green heart," a nod to its wood.

These are slow-growing, evergreen canopy trees reaching up to 40 metres in height, though most mature around 30 m. They are hermaphroditic, with oppositely arranged, simple leaves and drupe fruits that serve as an important food source for birds. The wood and bark are pleasantly scented.

The most well-known species, C. rodiei (greenheart), is famed for its exceptionally hard, dense timber — so tough it cannot be worked with standard tools and does not float. It is naturally resistant to marine borers, making it prized for docks, marine pilings, and historic shipbuilding, including Shackleton's Endurance. The genus faces pressure from heavy timber exploitation, though C. rodiei shows resilience by resprouting from stumps.

Etymology

The genus name Chlorocardium derives from Greek chloros (green) and kardia (heart), referring to the distinctive greenish heartwood for which the trees are known.

Distribution

Chlorocardium is native to northern South America, occurring in Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and across the Guiana Shield — including northeastern Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. C. rodiei is specifically native to Guyana and Suriname.

Ecology

Chlorocardium trees grow in evergreen tropical forests with near-continuous moisture and cloud cover for much of the year. They are slow-growing canopy species. Their drupe fruits are an important food source for birds.

Conservation

Although no formal IUCN Red List status is recorded, the genus is heavily exploited by the timber industry, leading to a shortage of mature trees. C. rodiei shows some resilience — it can resprout from over 50% of cut stumps — but pressure on wild populations remains high.

History

Greenheart (C. rodiei) timber has a storied maritime history. Its extreme hardness and natural resistance to marine borers made it ideal for dock gates — including the historic Manchester dock gate in Liverpool — and marine pilings. The wood sheathed the planks of Ernest Shackleton's icebreaker Endurance and formed the keel of the United States Coast Guard cutter USS Bear. It was also an early choice for fly fishing rods.
