Cneoridium is a monotypic genus in the citrus family (Rutaceae, order Sapindales) containing the single species Cneoridium dumosum, commonly known as bushrue or coast spice bush. It is a perennial, evergreen shrub native to the coast of southern California and Baja California, thriving in hot, dry conditions.

The plant is an intricately branched shrub reaching over 1.5 meters in height and spread, with a rounded form. Its twigs bear small, linear to oblong, glabrous leaves 1 to 2.5 cm long, arranged oppositely and dotted with small glands. The leaves are aromatic, and the flowers give off a citrusy sweet perfume. Inflorescences are cymes of 1 to 3 flowers, each just over a centimeter wide with four or five rounded white petals and eight yellow-anthered white stamens. The fruits are round green berries about half a centimeter wide with a thin, gland-pitted peel resembling miniature citrus, turning reddish-brown with age, each containing one or two spherical seeds.

First discovered by botanist Thomas Nuttall in San Diego and originally described as Pitavia dumosa by Torrey and Gray, the species was recombined into Cneoridium dumosum by Hooker f. and validated by Baillon in 1873. The genus is placed in subfamily Amyridoideae, closely related to Amyris and Stauranthus. Contact with the foliage can cause phytophotodermatitis — blistering and burning rashes common among citrus family members.

Etymology

The generic name Cneoridium derives from the diminutive form of Cneorum, the spurge olive, which in turn comes from the Greek kneoron, applied to dwarf shrubs resembling the olive. The leading "c" is silent — the name is pronounced "Nee-oh-rí-di-um." The specific epithet dumosum comes from the Latin dūmōsus, meaning "bushy" or "shrubby."

Distribution

Cneoridium is found in southern California (San Diego and Orange counties, plus San Clemente Island) and throughout northwestern Baja California south to the central desert, with a disjunct population in the Sierra de San Borja near Bahia de Los Angeles. It grows on coastal bluffs, mesas, hillsides, and washes in chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and coastal succulent scrub habitats below 1,000 meters elevation.

Ecology

This shrub is an important component of coastal sage scrub and chaparral ecosystems in its native range. It provides habitat for the San Quintin Quail (Callipepla californica subsp. plumbea). The plant is adapted to hot, dry coastal conditions and often goes dormant during summer, with leaves becoming dull green and later turning yellow or orange with frost.

Cultivation

Cneoridium was introduced to horticulture by Theodore Payne. Though it has a reputation for being difficult to establish initially, once settled it is a long-lived, slow-growing shrub that thrives on neglect. It tolerates hot, dry climates with some afternoon shade and often stays green with no supplemental water after establishment. It goes dormant in summer and may turn yellow or orange with frost in fall or winter. Flowers appear from winter to spring, rewarding growers with January blooms.

The plant can be propagated by cuttings taken in winter or spring from stems at least one year old, treated with rooting hormone, and placed in a mix of half peat and half moist perlite inside a partially sealed plastic bag kept warm with indirect light. Seed propagation is also effective: berries picked when chocolate-brown at summer's end yield germination rates approaching 100% when stratified at 55°F for a couple of weeks. Plants should be positioned away from pathways due to the risk of phytophotodermatitis from foliage contact.

Conservation

Cneoridium is listed as imperiled. Its coastal habitats face ongoing threats from coastal development, urbanization, military operations, and fire suppression, which can degrade the chaparral and coastal sage scrub ecosystems it depends on.

Taxonomy Notes

Cneoridium was first encountered by Western science when Thomas Nuttall collected it during his stay in San Diego — likely on Point Loma — while waiting for a ship back to Boston. Torrey and Gray originally described it as Pitavia dumosa in their Flora of North America from incomplete specimens, noting it differed from the Pitavia genus as circumscribed by Jussieu. Hooker f. later moved it to Cneoridium dumosum but produced a nomen invalidum by failing to specify the rank. Baillon corrected this in 1873 in Histoire des Plantes, establishing the current accepted name Cneoridium dumosum (Nutt.) Hook.f. ex Baill. The genus belongs to subfamily Amyridoideae within Rutaceae, closely related to Amyris (its sister clade) and Stauranthus, all sharing fleshy fruits.
