Conocarpus is a small genus of two accepted flowering plant species in the family Combretaceae, placed in the order Myrtales. The genus comprises dense, multiple-trunked shrubs or small to medium-sized trees, typically ranging from 1 to 20 metres in height.

Both species are associated with coastal and riparian habitats in tropical regions. Conocarpus erectus (buttonwood) is a widely distributed mangrove associate, occurring along coasts of tropical America from Bermuda and southern Florida through the West Indies and from Mexico south to Brazil, as well as on the Pacific Coast from Mexico to Peru (including the Galápagos Islands), and along the west African coast from Senegal to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Conocarpus lancifolius (Djibouti frankincense tree or Djibouti conocarpus) is far more restricted, native to Somalia and Yemen along the southern Red Sea coasts, where it grows alongside seasonal rivers. It is widely cultivated across eastern and northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

The genus belongs to Combretaceae, a family of flowering plants also containing well-known mangrove genera such as Laguncularia and Lumnitzera. Although only two living species are currently accepted, the genus has a long taxonomic history with many names now reassigned to other genera including Anogeissus and Laguncularia.

Etymology

The genus name Conocarpus derives from the Greek words κονος (konos), meaning "cone," and καρπος (karpos), meaning "fruit," a reference to the characteristic cone-like clusters of small, compressed fruits that the plants produce.

Distribution

Conocarpus erectus is native to tropical American coastlines from Bermuda and southern Florida through the West Indies and Central America to Brazil, with a Pacific range from Mexico to Peru including the Galápagos Islands, and a disjunct population along the west African coast from Senegal to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Conocarpus lancifolius has a much narrower native range restricted to Somalia and Yemen, but is widely cultivated across eastern and northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

Ecology

Both species occupy coastal and near-coastal habitats. Conocarpus erectus is a mangrove associate, typically found at the landward fringe of mangrove forests in intertidal and supratidal zones rather than in regularly inundated areas. Conocarpus lancifolius grows alongside seasonal rivers (wadis) in its native arid range along the southern Red Sea coast.
