Coris Genus

Coris is a small genus of flowering plants in the primrose family, Primulaceae (order Ericales), containing a single widely recognized species, Coris monspeliensis, commonly known as Montpellier coris or heath-leaved coris. GBIF's taxonomic backbone records the genus as published by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum (1753) and lists it as effectively monotypic, with only orthographic or synonymous variants beneath the accepted species. Historically the genus has also been treated under the segregate families Coridaceae or Myrsinaceae by some classifications before being placed within a broadly circumscribed Primulaceae.

Plants form low, woody-based subshrubs with erect or ascending, densely leafy stems. The leaves are leathery, linear, up to about 20 mm long, alternate and stalkless, either hairless or hairy, with the uppermost leaves sometimes bearing small marginal teeth. Flowers are borne in short, dense terminal clusters; each has five unequal petals that are deeply lobed and narrow, giving the flower head a fringed appearance, with colour ranging from pink to blue and a flower diameter up to about 12 mm. The bell-shaped calyx is distinctive, armed with up to 20 red or black spine-tipped teeth that persist around the small spherical seed capsule (up to 2 mm across).

Coris is native to the Mediterranean basin, with records spanning southern Europe (Spain, France, Italy including Sardinia and Sicily, Greece, Albania), the Balearic Islands, North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt), and the eastern Mediterranean and Horn of Africa (Lebanon-Syria, Somalia). It typically grows in dry, open coastal habitats such as sandy or rocky shorelines and maritime scrub, reflecting the genus's tolerance for arid, salt-exposed, well-drained conditions.
