Corycium is a genus of terrestrial orchids native to Eastern and Southern Africa, placed in the family Orchidaceae within the order Asparagales. It comprises around 13–14 species, most concentrated in South Africa (with some ranging into Lesotho, Swaziland, Malawi, and Tanzania), and about ten of these are characteristic components of the fynbos vegetation of the Cape region. In South Africa the genus is known by the common name monkshood orchids, a reference to the distinctive hood formed by the flower.
Like many terrestrial orchids of the region, Corycium species pass through a dormant season as an underground tuber, re-sprouting each growing season with numerous leaves that are scattered along the stem but cluster more densely near its base. The flowers are borne in dense spikes and are not especially showy, typically colored brown, green, or purple rather than bright. Structurally, the uppermost three tepals converge and fuse into the "hood" (galea) that gives the group its common name, while the two lateral sepals are almost completely united. The lip is fused to the column and carries an appendage that arches over and covers the anthers — a specialized arrangement of the pollination apparatus typical of many African terrestrial orchid genera.
The genus includes species such as Corycium crispum and Corycium orobanchoides, the latter having been illustrated in Edwards's Botanical Register as early as 1838, indicating that the genus was already known to Western botany in the early 19th century.
Distribution
Corycium species occur across Eastern and Southern Africa, with the greatest concentration in South Africa and further species reaching Lesotho, Swaziland, Malawi, and Tanzania. About ten of the roughly fourteen species are native to the fynbos vegetation of the Cape region.
Ecology
Roughly ten of the genus's species are native to fynbos, the fire-prone shrubland vegetation characteristic of South Africa's Cape region, where the plants persist through the dry season as underground tubers.
Taxonomy Notes
Corycium belongs to the family Orchidaceae and order Asparagales (GBIF backbone). GBIF's accepted backbone lists 13 descendant taxa in the genus, while Wikipedia describes "some 14 species" — a minor discrepancy between the two sources.
