Corymbium is a genus of flowering plants in the daisy family (Asteraceae), comprising nine currently recognised species, two subspecies and six varieties. It is the sole genus in the monogeneric subfamily Corymbioideae and tribe Corymbieae, a placement supported by recent molecular phylogenetics showing Corymbioideae as sister to the Asteroideae, sharing a distinctive nine-base-pair deletion in the ndhF gene with Asteroideae and Cichorioideae but absent elsewhere in Asteraceae. The genus was historically classified within the tribe Vernonieae, but its unusually long, densely hairy ovary, short style branches, and distinct chemistry (macrolide diterpenes rather than the sesquiterpene lactones typical of Vernonieae) long suggested it did not belong there.
Corymbium was first validly named by Linnaeus in his 1753 Species Plantarum, though earlier pre-Linnaean descriptions date back to 1680. The genus name derives from the Ancient Greek κόρυμβος (kórumbos), "a cluster," referring to the corymb-like flowering heads of several species.
Plants in the genus are stemless, perennial, herbaceous, and 5–60 cm tall, growing in tufts from a fibrous, hairy rhizome. Before flowering they closely resemble monocotyledons, owing to a basal rosette of leaves with prominent parallel veins. What is most distinctive botanically is that, unlike most Asteraceae, each flower head in Corymbium contains only a single bisexual disc floret — mauve, pink, or white — enclosed by a sheath formed from just two large involucral bracts, rather than the many-flowered heads typical of the daisy family. These heads are borne in compact or loosely branched racemes, panicles, or corymbs. The dry, one-seeded fruits (cypselae) are topped with a crown of pappus bristles.
All species are endemic to South Africa's Cape Floristic Region, occurring across the Western and Eastern Cape from the Cedarberg to near Grahamstown, typically on nutrient-poor sandy or stony soils in fynbos vegetation. They favour open plant communities and flower mainly in summer, often triggered by fire or disturbance. The flowers produce abundant nectar and are visited by bees, beetles, wasps, and ants. Conservation status varies by taxon, ranging from least concern to critically endangered.
Etymology
The name Corymbium comes from the Ancient Greek κόρυμβος (kórumbos), "a cluster," referring to the corymb-like flower clusters of some species. In Afrikaans the genus is called heuningbossie ("honey bush"), a nod to the copious nectar its flowers produce; in English the species are collectively known as "plampers."
Distribution
All nine species of Corymbium are endemic to the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa, occurring in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces from the Cedarberg south and east to around Grahamstown, but absent from the Knysna forest. They grow from sea level to roughly 1,850 m, mostly on nutrient-poor, shallow, quartzite sandy or slate/phyllite/granite-derived soils, with one species restricted to shallow calcareous soil near Bredasdorp and De Hoop.
Ecology
Species grow in open, sparsely vegetated fynbos communities or at their margins, flowering mainly in summer — often triggered by fire or other disturbance such as clearing — for a season or two before reverting to a purely vegetative state. Their nectar-rich flowers attract bees, beetles, wasps, and ants, which are thought to be the main pollinators.
Conservation
Conservation status varies considerably across the genus's seventeen recognised taxa: eight are of least concern, two (C. laxum subsp. bolusii and C. elsiae) are considered rare, C. theilerii is assessed as critically endangered, and three varieties of C. africanum subsp. scabridum have not yet been assessed.
Taxonomy Notes
Corymbium is the only genus in subfamily Corymbioideae and tribe Corymbieae. It was long placed in tribe Vernonieae following Cassini (1818), but its long, densely hairy ovary, short style branches, and distinctive chemistry (macrolide diterpenes without the sesquiterpene lactones typical of Vernonieae) cast doubt on that placement. Molecular phylogenetics now supports Corymbioideae as sister to Asteroideae, sharing with it and Cichorioideae a nine-base-pair deletion in the ndhF gene not found elsewhere in Asteraceae. The genus and its species have been revised several times, most recently by Frans M. Weitz in 1989, recognising nine species, two subspecies, and six varieties.
