Corynephorus is a small genus of grasses (family Poaceae, order Poales) native to Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. It was published by Palisot de Beauvois in his Essai d'une Nouvelle Agrostographie in 1812. Wikipedia lists five species in the genus — C. canescens, C. deschampsioides, C. divaricatus, C. fasciculatus, and C. macrantherus — with collective native distribution spanning from Portugal and Norway in the west and north, across the Mediterranean basin, to Russia, Syria, Israel, Jordan, Palestine, and Iran in the east, and Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia in North Africa.

The best-known member, Corynephorus canescens (grey hair-grass, or gray clubawn grass), is a tufted perennial grass with narrow, wiry leaf blades (2–6 cm long, 0.3–0.5 mm wide) and compact panicles (1.5–8 cm long). Its florets carry a distinctive dorsal awn with a dentate apex — the club-like awn tip referenced in the common name "clubawn grass." The lemma is small (1.8–2.2 mm), membranous and keelless, with a hairy floret callus, and each flower has three short stamens.

GBIF occurrence data (sourced from the World Checklist of Vascular Plants) shows C. canescens naturalized well outside its native Eurasian and North African range, with introduced populations recorded in northeastern Argentina, British Columbia, South Africa's Cape Provinces, central Chile, Connecticut, and Ecuador — consistent with the species' documented ability to colonize open, sandy ground. In its native range it favors dry, sandy, open habitats; in the United Kingdom it is rare, occurring at sites such as the Wangford Warren and Carr Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Suffolk Breckland.

Distribution

Corynephorus is native across Europe (Portugal to Norway and Russia), the Mediterranean, North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia), and the Middle East (Syria, Israel, Jordan, Palestine, Iran). GBIF/WCVP records also show C. canescens naturalized outside this range, including in Argentina, British Columbia, South Africa, Chile, Connecticut, and Ecuador.

Ecology

The genus favors open, dry, sandy ground; Corynephorus canescens is associated with coastal dune and sandy heathland habitat and is rare in the United Kingdom, where it is recorded at Breckland SSSI sites such as Wangford Warren and Carr.

Taxonomy Notes

The genus Corynephorus P.Beauv. was published in Palisot de Beauvois's Essai d'une Nouvelle Agrostographie, p. 90 (1812), and is placed in family Poaceae, order Poales.
