Coulteria is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family Fabaceae, placed in the subfamily Caesalpinioideae and order Fabales. It comprises about ten to eleven accepted species of trees and shrubs native to the tropical Americas, ranging from northern Mexico through Central America (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica) to Colombia and Venezuela, and including the Caribbean islands of Cuba and Jamaica.
The genus was originally described by Carl Sigismund Kunth (with Humboldt and Bonpland) in 1824. Its current circumscription is largely the result of a 2017 taxonomic revision by S. Sotuyo and G. P. Lewis, which transferred a number of species previously classified under other genera — including several species first described by Britton & Rose in 1930 and by Greenman in 1897 — into Coulteria. Other species, such as Coulteria platyloba, were placed in the genus by botanist Nelson Zamora. This history reflects the broader, ongoing reclassification of the tropical American Caesalpinioideae, a group historically lumped together under the large genus Caesalpinia in a broad sense.
Representative species include Coulteria mollis, found from eastern Mexico to Colombia and Venezuela, and Coulteria platyloba, distributed across Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica — the species depicted in the genus's most widely used reference photograph.
Distribution
Coulteria is native to the tropical Americas, ranging from northern Mexico through Central America (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica) to Colombia and Venezuela, and including the Caribbean islands of Cuba and Jamaica. GBIF occurrence-distribution records corroborate this range across Mexico and Central America, Colombia, Cuba, and Jamaica.
Taxonomy Notes
Coulteria Kunth was published in 1824 (Humboldt, Bonpland & Kunth, Nova Genera et Species Plantarum 6: 328) in the family Fabaceae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae. Its present-day species list is largely the product of a 2017 revision by S. Sotuyo and G. P. Lewis, which moved multiple species — some originally described as far back as 1897 (Greenman) and 1930 (Britton & Rose) — from other genera into Coulteria; Coulteria platyloba was placed here by N. Zamora. GBIF's accepted backbone record lists 11 descendant taxa under the genus.
