Ctenidium Genus

Ctenidium is a genus of mosses, most often placed in the family Hypnaceae, though the GBIF backbone taxonomy places it instead in Myuriaceae, within the order Hypnales (class Bryopsida, phylum Bryophyta). The GBIF checklist records 28 species-level taxa under the genus, giving it a cosmopolitan distribution. The genus name is built from the Greek κτενίδιον (ktenídion), "little comb" (cteno- + -idium) — a comb theme echoed remarkably consistently in common names for the genus around the world, including German Kammmoos, Dutch Kammos, Polish grzebieniowiec, Slovak hrebienok, Czech hřebenitka, Norwegian kammoseslekta, and Chinese 梳苔屬/梳藓属/梳蘚屬 (all translating to "comb-moss" or "comb-moss genus"), alongside the English vernacular "ctenidium moss."

Taxonomically, the genus carries the authorship "(Schimp.) Mitt.": it was first described by Wilhelm Philipp Schimper before being formally published at genus rank by William Mitten in his 1869 work Musci Austro-Americani (Journal of the Linnean Society, Botany).

The best-known and most widespread member is Ctenidium molluscum, native to Eurasia and Northern America. A recently described species, Ctenidium multiseriatum (S.He & M.K.Thomas, 2023), has also been placed in the genus, reflecting ongoing taxonomic work within the group. As with many moss genera, family-level placement of Ctenidium is not fully settled across taxonomic authorities, with sources disagreeing between Hypnaceae and Myuriaceae.
