Cumulopuntia is a genus of low-growing cacti in the family Cactaceae, order Caryophyllales, native to the Andes and surrounding lowlands of South America. The genus was established by Friedrich Ritter in 1980 in his work Kakteen Südamerika, by reclassifying multiple species previously placed in the closely related genera Tephrocactus and Opuntia.

Plants in Cumulopuntia are characterised by their compact, cushion-forming or mounding habit, producing segmented, often globose to cylindrical stem pads armed with spines. They typically grow at high elevations in the Andean puna and adjacent arid zones, where harsh conditions — intense solar radiation, frost, and drought — have shaped their compact growth forms.

The genus is considered taxonomically problematic: its circumscription has changed repeatedly since its description, and the question of whether it should be maintained as distinct from Opuntia remains actively debated among cactus systematists. The synonym Sphaeropuntia (Guiggi) reflects this ongoing instability.

The geographic range spans from Peru and Bolivia south through Chile (including both the northern and central regions) and into northwest Argentina. Notable members include Cumulopuntia sphaerica, C. boliviana, C. glomerata, and C. subterranea, the latter of which produces an underground tuberous stem as an adaptation to cold and drought.

Etymology

The genus name Cumulopuntia was coined by Friedrich Ritter in 1980. The name combines the Latin cumulo- (heap, pile, or mound) with Opuntia, the large related cactus genus, reflecting the mounding or cushion-forming growth habit of these plants and their close affinity with Opuntia.

Distribution

Cumulopuntia is native to western South America, occurring in Argentina (northwest), Bolivia, Chile (north and central), and Peru. The genus is strongly associated with Andean and puna habitats, typically at high altitudes where cold, drought, and high UV exposure prevail.

Taxonomy Notes

The genus was established by Friedrich Ritter (1980, Kakteen Südamerika 2: 399) by redefining species previously in Tephrocactus and Opuntia. Its boundaries remain contested: many treatments synonymise it with Opuntia, and the name Sphaeropuntia Guiggi is a recorded synonym. Further taxonomic work is needed to stabilise the circumscription.
