Cynomorium is a genus of parasitic, perennial flowering plants in the small family Cynomoriaceae, placed in the order Saxifragales. The genus is monotypic in practice, containing a single recognized species, Cynomorium coccineum — although its high-altitude Central Asian variety is sometimes treated as a distinct species, C. songaricum. Its taxonomic home was long disputed: it was historically classified in Balanophoraceae, and its current position within Saxifragales, possibly near the stonecrop family Crassulaceae, was only resolved in 2016 using nuclear, plastid, and mitochondrial DNA sequencing, a picture complicated by extensive horizontal gene transfer between the plant and its hosts.

Cynomorium is a fully achlorophyllous holoparasite, meaning it lacks chlorophyll, cannot photosynthesise, and is entirely dependent on a host plant's roots for nutrition. It spends most of its life as an underground rhizome, sending up a fleshy, largely subterranean stem bearing scale-like membranous leaves. In spring, following winter rain, it produces a low, dense, club-shaped inflorescence of minute dark-red to purplish flowers, 15–30 cm long, which may be male, female, or hermaphrodite. The flowers are pollinated by flies drawn to a sweet, faintly cabbage-like scent, after which the spike turns black; the fruit is a small, indehiscent nut. In the Mediterranean it typically parasitizes plants in the rockrose family (Cistaceae) or amaranth family (Amaranthaceae); further east it parasitizes Amaranthaceae and tamarisks (Tamaricaceae), and in China especially Nitraria sibirica (Nitrariaceae).

The genus favours dry, rocky, or sandy soils, often in coastal salt marshes and other saline habitats, and is generally rare or locally distributed. Its western range runs from Mauritania and Western Sahara through Morocco, the Canary Islands, southern Iberia, the Balearic Islands, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, southern Italy, Malta, and across North Africa to the Arabian Peninsula, Somalia, Iran, and Afghanistan; a separately recognized high-altitude form occurs across Central Asia and Mongolia.

Despite its odd, fungus-like appearance — which led 16th-century Knights of Malta to misidentify it as "Maltese fungus" and jealously guard its habitat on Gozo's Fungus Rock — Cynomorium has a long history of use in European, Arabian, and Chinese herbal medicine, valued particularly (via the doctrine of signatures) as a treatment for sexual and circulatory ailments, and known in China as suoyang.

Distribution

Found across coastal deserts and saline habitats from Mauritania, Western Sahara, and Morocco through southern Iberia, the Balearic Islands, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, southern Italy, Malta, North Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula to Somalia, Iran, and Afghanistan. A high-altitude form (sometimes treated as the separate species C. songaricum) occurs across Central Asia and Mongolia.

Ecology

A rare, achlorophyllous holoparasite of dry, rocky, or sandy — often saline coastal — soils. It parasitizes salt-tolerant hosts in Cistaceae or Amaranthaceae in the Mediterranean, and Amaranthaceae, Tamaricaceae, or (in China) Nitraria sibirica elsewhere; its fly-pollinated inflorescence emerges in spring after winter rain.

Taxonomy Notes

Long misclassified in Balanophoraceae, Cynomorium's placement in the Saxifragales — possibly near Crassulaceae — was only resolved in 2016 via nuclear, plastid, and mitochondrial DNA sequencing; its exact position within the order remains uncertain, complicated by extensive horizontal gene transfer with its host plants. History

Named "Maltese fungus" after 16th-century Knights of Malta mistook it for a fungus and jealously guarded its habitat on Gozo's "Fungus Rock," restricting access by cable car into the 19th century (the site is now a nature reserve). In China, it gave its name to Suoyang City after a legendary 7th-century siege survived by eating the plant, and it entered Chinese materia medica in the 14th century (Zhu Danxi, 1347) after being introduced from Mongolia during the Yuan dynasty.

Cultural Uses

Used widely in European, Arabian, and Chinese herbal medicine. Per the doctrine of signatures, its phallic inflorescence suggested a cure for erectile dysfunction and its red colour a cure for blood ailments; medieval Arabic physicians called it "tarthuth" ("the treasure of drugs") and used it for piles, nosebleeds, and uterine bleeding; Bedouin travellers ate the fresh peeled spikes as a sweet, astringent food. It has also served as a famine food, a contraceptive, a toothpaste, and a crimson fabric dye.
