Dactylis is a small genus of perennial grasses in the family Poaceae (order Poales), placed in the "bluegrass" subfamily Pooideae. It was described by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum (1753) and is native to Eurasia and North Africa, though it has since been introduced and naturalized worldwide — including southern Africa, Australia, the Americas, and various oceanic islands — and is considered invasive in parts of its introduced range, notably reported as an environmental weed in several Australian states.

The genus has a complicated taxonomic history: many authors have treated it as containing only a single, highly variable species, Dactylis glomerata, with variation recognized only at subspecies level. More recently, a second species, Dactylis smithii (restricted to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and Madeira), has gained wider acceptance, and some botanists recognize additional species, particularly island endemics in Macaronesia. Several ploidy levels occur within the genus — diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid populations — with natural triploids and pentaploids arising where diploid and tetraploid populations overlap.

Species of Dactylis are tussock-forming perennials, 15–140 cm tall, with leaves 20–50 cm long and up to 1.5 cm broad. Their distinctive, tufted, triangular flowerheads form panicles 10–15 cm long that turn pale grey-brown as seed matures; spikelets are 5–9 mm long and typically bear two to five flowers. A flattened stem base helps distinguish Dactylis from many other grasses.

Known in English as cock's-foot (or cocksfoot) and orchard grass, Dactylis is agriculturally important as a forage and hay grass, valued for its drought tolerance and ability to grow in a wide range of soils, including under the shade of trees. Numerous cultivated strains exist, bred for pasture, hay, or improved winter hardiness. It is occasionally used as a lawn grass, though its coarse texture makes it a poor choice compared with finer turf grasses. Ecologically, Dactylis grasslands support a range of wildlife, serving as a food source for insects such as beetles, grasshoppers, and lepidoptera caterpillars, and for birds including sparrows and horned larks, while also providing cover for small mammals and snakes. Its pollen is also a well-known cause of hay fever.

Distribution

Dactylis is native to Eurasia and North Africa. Dactylis glomerata spans Eurasia and North Africa and has been naturalized in southern Africa, Australia, the Americas, and various oceanic islands, while Dactylis smithii is restricted to Macaronesia (Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira). Ecology

Dactylis grasses grow in meadows, waste ground, roadsides, and downs, tolerating both dry and mildly wet conditions. They are an important food source and habitat for wildlife — insects such as beetles, grasshoppers, and lepidoptera caterpillars feed on them, as do birds like sparrows and horned larks, while small mammals and snakes use the tussocks for shelter. The pollen is also a well-documented cause of hay fever.

Cultivation

Dactylis (chiefly D. glomerata, orchard grass) is widely cultivated as a forage and hay grass, valued for drought tolerance and adaptability to a wide range of soils, including shaded ground under trees. Breeders have developed numerous strains for pasture, hay, or improved winter hardiness (e.g. selections from Canada, Sweden, and Finland). It is occasionally sown as a shade-tolerant lawn grass, though its coarse texture makes it a poor turf choice.

Taxonomy Notes

Many botanists have historically treated Dactylis as a single, highly variable species (D. glomerata sensu lato) with numerous subspecies; a more recent trend accepts two species, and some authors recognize further species, especially island endemics in Macaronesia. The genus shows several ploidy levels (diploid, tetraploid, hexaploid), with natural triploids and pentaploids occurring where cytotypes overlap.

Conservation

Dactylis glomerata has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List. It is drought-resistant and can spread aggressively; it is reported as an environmental weed in Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT, and New South Wales, Australia, and Wikipedia likewise describes the genus as an invasive species in parts of its introduced range.
