Damnacanthus is a genus of about 13 species of spiny shrubs in the coffee family, Rubiaceae (order Gentianales), first described by C. F. Gaertner in 1805. The genus ranges from Assam and the eastern Himalaya across temperate and subtropical eastern Asia, including China (11 species, six of them endemic), Japan, Korea, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
Plants are shrubs, often bearing paired spines at the leaf axils or shoot tips, with opposite leaves and persistent, hardened stipules. The genus has an unusually complex, sympodial branching pattern in which alternating nodes bear reduced scale-like prophylls, normal foliage leaves, and paired thorn-like reduced shoots — a growth form studied in detail by botanists Robbrecht and colleagues, who showed the characteristic "spines" are in fact reduced shoot systems rather than modified stipules. Flowers are borne singly or in small clusters, tubular-funnelform, white to yellow or pale pink-purple, typically four-lobed, and often distylous (having two flower morphs with reciprocal stamen and style lengths). Fruits are small, fleshy, red drupes with a persistent calyx, each containing several pyrenes. Studies of breeding biology across Japanese and Chinese populations have found variation in breeding system linked to ploidy level, alongside the distyly and dimorphic pollen typical of the genus.
Taxonomically, the once-separate genus Tetraplasia is now included within Damnacanthus; the genus was monographed for China by H. S. Lo and later by Y. Z. Ruan. Species recognized in this genus include Damnacanthus indicus, D. major, and D. macrophyllus, among others found across its East and South Asian range. In parts of Japan and Taiwan, where the genus's taxonomy has been closely studied, some species reportedly have traditional medicinal uses.

Damnacanthus C.F.Gaertn. (Rubiaceae, order Gentianales) was published in 1805; GBIF's backbone lists 21 descendant taxa including species and synonyms. The once-distinct genus Tetraplasia is now treated as part of Damnacanthus. The genus's distinctive sympodial branching — alternating scale-like prophylls, foliage leaves, and spine-bearing nodes — was analyzed in detail by Robbrecht et al. (1991), and the group has been revised monographically for China by H. S. Lo (1979) and Y. Z. Ruan (1999).
