Danae is a monotypic genus of evergreen flowering plants placed in the family Asparagaceae (subfamily Convallarioideae), within the order Asparagales. It was formerly classified in the family Ruscaceae before reclassification under the APG III system; GBIF's Backbone Taxonomy confirms the current Asparagaceae placement and confirms the genus is monotypic. The genus contains a single accepted species, Danae racemosa, commonly known as Alexandrian laurel or poet's laurel, native to west Asia. The species was originally described by Carl Linnaeus and later transferred to the genus Danae by Conrad Moench, giving the accepted name Danae racemosa (L.) Moench.
Danae racemosa is a slow-growing evergreen shrub reaching about 60 cm in diameter, valued primarily for its elegant, glossy green foliage rather than for showy flowers. Small greenish flowers are followed by red berries. It is a shade-loving plant, which suits its use as an understory or shaded-garden subject.
As an ornamental, it has become a popular shade plant and received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, confirmed in 2017. Beyond horticulture, the species has drawn some pharmacological interest: a hydro-methanolic extract of its leaves, along with two isolated flavonoids, has been reported to show anti-nociceptive (pain-relieving) properties in rat studies.
Because Danae is monotypic, it is represented in cultivation and in regional floras solely by Danae racemosa; no other accepted species are currently recognized within the genus.
