Dennstaedtia is a genus of mostly tropical and subtropical ferns, first described in 1801. It belongs to the family Dennstaedtiaceae, within the order Polypodiales. Sources differ slightly on species count: Wikipedia gives roughly 58 species, while the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy lists 40 accepted taxa in the genus. Some of its species are known by the common names "hayscented fern" or "cup fern."
The genus has a broad tropical and subtropical distribution, with species native to the tropical Americas, Madagascar, southern and eastern Asia, Australia, New Guinea, and the Pacific Islands.
Morphologically, Dennstaedtia species have homomorphic fronds (fertile and sterile fronds look alike). The stipe is grooved on its upper surface and hairy when young. The lamina (leaf blade) is triangular to oblong in outline and many times pinnately divided, usually with dense hairs, especially along the rachis. The veins are free (not netted) and branch pinnately, with each veinlet stopping short of the leaf margin and ending in a hydathode (a water-secreting pore) at its tip. The sori (spore clusters) are orbicular, borne at the margin, terminal on each veinlet, and separate from one another rather than fused into a continuous line — a key distinguishing feature of the genus among the cup ferns.
Historically, the temperate North American hay-scented fern — now treated as Sitobolium punctilobulum, but for a long time classified as Dennstaedtia punctilobula — was probably the genus's best-known member outside the tropics. It forms extensive, clonal ground-cover colonies on level ground in the Appalachian region of the eastern United States, though it has since been reclassified into a separate genus and is no longer counted among Dennstaedtia's species.
