Dictyanthus is a small genus of flowering plants in the dogbane family, Apocynaceae (order Gentianales), first described in 1844 by the French botanist Joseph Decaisne. The genus is native to Mexico and Central America, where its species grow as vines.

The GBIF backbone taxonomy lists around a dozen accepted species, including Dictyanthus tuberosus, D. macvaughianus, D. sepicola, D. yucatanensis, D. aeneus, D. altatensis, D. asper, D. ceratopetalus, D. eximius, D. hamatus, D. pavonii, and D. tigrinus, alongside more recently described species such as D. nichongus (2022).

Dictyanthus has a history of taxonomic instability with respect to the related genus Matelea, also in Apocynaceae: at least one species long placed here, Dictyanthus reticulatus, is now treated as a synonym of Matelea reticulata, and photographic records of D. yucatanensis have likewise been catalogued under the name Matelea yucatanensis. This back-and-forth reflects ongoing revision of generic boundaries among these Mexican and Central American vines rather than a settled classification.

Little further natural-history detail is documented for the genus in the sources consulted here — occurrence and distribution data on file with GBIF are sparse, and no cultivation, ecological, or conservation information was found in the sources reviewed.

Distribution

Native to Mexico and Central America. The one geotagged photographic record reviewed (of a plant recorded under both the names Dictyanthus yucatanensis and Matelea yucatanensis) comes from the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico.

Taxonomy Notes

Described as a genus in 1844 by Decaisne, and placed in family Apocynaceae, order Gentianales. Generic boundaries with the closely associated genus Matelea have shifted over time: Dictyanthus reticulatus is now treated as a synonym of Matelea reticulata, and at least one further species has been catalogued under both Dictyanthus and Matelea names, indicating the two genera have been subject to ongoing taxonomic revision.
