Ebracteola is a small genus of succulent, mat-forming flowering plants in the ice-plant family, Aizoaceae, within the order Caryophyllales. It was described by Moritz Kurt Dinter and Gustav Schwantes in 1928, in the Zeitschrift für Sukkulentenkunde (vol. 3, p. 15). The genus is accepted in the GBIF backbone taxonomy and comprises just four recognized species: Ebracteola derenbergiana, E. fulleri, E. montis-moltkei, and E. wilmaniae.

Like other members of Aizoaceae, Ebracteola is native to the winter- and summer-rainfall arid regions of southern Africa, occurring in Namibia and in South Africa's Cape Provinces, Free State, and Northern Provinces. Aizoaceae as a family is renowned for extreme leaf succulence as an adaptation to arid habitats, and several of its genera (the "mesembs" or "vygies") are cultivated for their compact, fleshy foliage and daisy-like flowers; Ebracteola belongs to this same lineage of southern African succulents, though it remains a taxonomically minor, little-documented genus relative to larger mesemb genera such as Lithops or Delosperma.

All four currently accepted species were originally described by, or in collaboration with, Dinter, Schwantes, or L. Bolus — botanists central to the early twentieth-century documentation of southern African Aizoaceae — before later being placed in Ebracteola (in some cases by H.E.K. Hartmann or J. Glen). Beyond its taxonomic placement and native range, published information on the genus's morphology, ecology, and conservation status is limited in freely available sources.

Distribution

Ebracteola is native to Namibia and to South Africa's Cape Provinces, Free State, and Northern Provinces.

Taxonomy Notes

Ebracteola Dinter & Schwantes was published in 1928 in Zeitschrift für Sukkulentenkunde 3: 15. It belongs to family Aizoaceae, order Caryophyllales, and is accepted in the GBIF backbone with 4 species, all of which were originally described under other genera before being transferred to Ebracteola.
