Echinaria is a small genus of annual grasses (family Poaceae, order Poales) first described by René Louiche Desfontaines in his Flora Atlantica (1799). It is monotypic — the only known species is Echinaria capitata, commonly called "Hedgehog Grass," a name reflecting the genus's characteristic dense, bur-like flowering heads.
The genus is native to the Mediterranean Basin and extends through Southwest and Central Asia, with a range stretching from Portugal and Morocco in the west to Kazakhstan in the east. Botanical checklist data place its native distribution across roughly thirty floristic regions bordering the Mediterranean and Black and Caspian Seas, including North Africa (Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia), southern Europe (Portugal, Spain, France including Corsica, Italy including Sardinia and Sicily, the Balkans, Bulgaria, Hungary, and former Yugoslavia), the eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Crete, Cyprus, Turkey, the Levant), and Southwest and Central Asia (Iran, Iraq, the Caucasus and Transcaucasus, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan). It has also become naturalized outside this native range, having been recorded as an introduced plant in Germany.
Taxonomically, Echinaria sits within the grass family Poaceae. Two other generic names, Panicastrella and Reimbolea, are now treated as synonyms folded into Echinaria, reflecting a history of taxonomic revision within this small, distinctive genus. As a monotypic genus, essentially everything known about Echinaria's biology and ecology is drawn from its single constituent species.
Distribution
Native to the Mediterranean Basin and Southwest to Central Asia, ranging from Portugal and Morocco in the west to Kazakhstan in the east. World Checklist of Vascular Plants data (via GBIF) list native occurrence across roughly thirty Mediterranean, Balkan, Caucasian, and Central Asian floristic regions, and record it as an introduced, naturalized plant in Germany.
