Eriaxis is a monotypic genus of orchids belonging to the family Orchidaceae, subfamily Vanilloideae, order Asparagales. It was described by the German botanist Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach, with the name published in Linnaea 41: 63 (1876). The genus contains a single species, Eriaxis rigida, which is endemic to New Caledonia in the southwest Pacific.

Within the Vanilloideae, the closest relative of Eriaxis is the genus Clematepistephium, which is also endemic to New Caledonia — a pairing that reflects the island's long isolation and its role as a refuge for ancient, narrowly distributed plant lineages.

Eriaxis rigida is widespread across New Caledonia's main island, Grande Terre, and also occurs on the Belep Islands to the north and the Isle of Pines to the south. It grows in metal-rich, nutrient-poor soils — characteristic of New Caledonia's extensive ultramafic terrain — within humid forests and maquis shrubland, from sea level up to about 1,000 m altitude. Its tolerance of these harsh, metal-laden substrates places it among the specialized flora adapted to New Caledonia's distinctive geology.

As a monotypic genus restricted to a single Pacific island group, Eriaxis illustrates the high degree of endemism found among New Caledonia's orchids, many of which are found nowhere else in the world.

Distribution

Eriaxis rigida is endemic to New Caledonia, occurring on the main island Grande Terre as well as the Belep Islands in the north and the Isle of Pines in the south.

Ecology

The species grows in metal-rich, nutrient-poor soils in humid forests and maquis shrubland, from sea level up to roughly 1,000 m altitude — conditions typical of New Caledonia's ultramafic terrain.

Taxonomy Notes

Eriaxis was described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach (Rchb.f.), published in Linnaea 41: 63 (1876). It sits in subfamily Vanilloideae (family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales) and is monotypic, containing only Eriaxis rigida. Its closest relative is Clematepistephium, another orchid genus endemic to New Caledonia.
