Esenbeckia is a genus of flowering plants in the rue family, Rutaceae, belonging to the order Sapindales. All species are native to the Americas, with the greatest diversity concentrated in South America, though the genus extends northward through Central America into Mexico and reaches the Rio Grande Valley of Texas at its northern limit. The genus comprises around 36 species according to GBIF.

Plants in the genus are woody — shrubs and small trees — characteristic of the broader Rutaceae family, which includes citrus fruits and related aromatic plants. Members of the genus are found in tropical and subtropical forests across their range. They are commonly known as jopoy, derived from the Mayan name for Esenbeckia berlandieri, or by the Spanish common name gasparillo.

The genus was named in honor of Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck (1776–1858), a German naturalist. Its placement within Rutaceae has been revised several times: the Takhtajan system assigned it to subfamily Rutoideae, while GRIN placed it in Toddalioideae. A 2021 molecular classification of the Rutaceae places Esenbeckia in subfamily Zanthoxyloideae, a position accepted by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Website.

Notable members include Esenbeckia febrifuga, whose bark has been used medicinally in South America, Esenbeckia flava from Baja California Sur, and Esenbeckia pilocarpoides, which shares characteristics with the related medicinally important genus Pilocarpus.

Etymology

The genus name Esenbeckia commemorates Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck (1776–1858), a German naturalist and botanist. The common name jopoy derives from the Mayan language, originally referring to E. berlandieri; gasparillo is the Spanish common name used across parts of the genus's range.

Distribution

All species in the genus are native to the Americas. Diversity is highest in South America, particularly in Brazil and surrounding regions, with the range extending through Central America and Mexico as far north as the Rio Grande Valley of Texas in the United States. Esenbeckia flava is endemic to Baja California Sur, Mexico, while E. runyonii reaches the northernmost extent of the genus in northeastern Mexico and southern Texas.

Taxonomy Notes

The subfamilial placement of Esenbeckia within Rutaceae has changed with successive classifications. The Takhtajan system placed it in Rutoideae; the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) assigned it to Toddalioideae. A 2021 molecular classification of Rutaceae places the genus in Zanthoxyloideae, accepted by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Website. GBIF records the genus under family Rutaceae, order Sapindales, class Magnoliopsida.
