Hyoseris is a small genus of flowering plants in the daisy family Asteraceae, order Asterales. Native to the Mediterranean Basin, it comprises just three accepted species — Hyoseris lucida, Hyoseris scabra, and Hyoseris radiata — that grow as low-growing rosette herbs bearing solitary yellow flower heads on leafless scapes. The genus is distributed from Portugal in the west to Israel in the east, with some species reaching as far north as Germany, occupying rocky slopes, garrigue, coastal cliffs, and disturbed ground typical of the Mediterranean scrubland zone.

Distribution

Hyoseris is native to the Mediterranean region, ranging from Portugal in the west to Israel in the east. A few species extend northward into central Europe as far as Germany. The genus is characteristic of rocky coastal and inland habitats throughout the Mediterranean Basin.

Taxonomy Notes

Hyoseris is placed in the family Asteraceae (tribe Cichorieae), order Asterales. GBIF recognises three accepted species in the genus: Hyoseris lucida, Hyoseris scabra, and Hyoseris radiata.
