Kandelia is a small genus of two mangrove tree species belonging to the family Rhizophoraceae, within the order Malpighiales. The genus is placed in the mangrove subtribe alongside other iconic intertidal genera and represents one of the more eastward-distributed mangrove lineages in Asia.
Plants in this genus grow as small trees adapted to brackish and tidal environments. Inflorescences are cymose, bearing 4 to 9 flowers, and the fruits are ovoid, characteristic of the viviparous reproductive strategy common in mangroves, in which seeds germinate while still attached to the parent plant. This propagule strategy allows seedlings to establish rapidly in unstable coastal sediments.
The two accepted species are Kandelia candel (L.) Druce, the longer-known member described by Linnaeus, and Kandelia obovata Sheue, H.Y. Liu & J. Yong, described in 2003 following morphological and molecular studies that distinguished the two as separate species. Prior to that revision, the genus was widely treated as monotypic.
Distribution
Kandelia species grow in mangrove habitats across tropical and subtropical coastal Asia, with a range spanning India, China, Japan, Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Vietnam, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, and Borneo.
Ecology
Kandelia species are obligate mangrove trees, inhabiting the intertidal zones of estuaries and sheltered coasts. They are adapted to brackish, poorly oxygenated soils and produce viviparous propagules that germinate on the parent plant before dispersing on tidal currents, enabling rapid colonisation of mudflats and coastal sediments.
Taxonomy Notes
The genus was long treated as monotypic, with Kandelia candel as its sole species. In 2003, Sheue, Liu & Yong separated populations in China, Japan, and adjacent regions as a distinct species, Kandelia obovata, based on differences in leaf shape, petal form, and molecular data. GBIF currently accepts both species and places the genus in family Rhizophoraceae, order Malpighiales.
