Leptochloa, commonly known as sprangletops, is a widespread genus of annual and perennial grasses in the family Poaceae (order Poales). The genus has a pantropical and warm-temperate distribution spanning Asia, Australia, and the Americas, with individual species occurring from the south-central United States and Mesoamerica south to Paraguay and Argentina, across the Caribbean islands, and in Southeast Asia and Australia.

Sprangletops are characterised by their slender, often branched inflorescences — a trait reflected in the genus name, derived from the Greek leptos (“thin”) and chloa (“grass”). The genus currently comprises approximately 14 accepted species (per Plants of the World Online, October 2024), a considerably reduced circumscription compared to the historical concept: many former Leptochloa species have been transferred to related genera including Dinebra, Diplachne, Disakisperma, Eragrostis, and others within the Chloridoideae subfamily.

Notable members include Leptochloa virgata (tropic sprangletop), ranging from South Carolina to Paraguay, and Leptochloa mucronata, which grows across south-central North America, Mesoamerica, the Caribbean, and the Galápagos Islands. Several species are associated with disturbed habitats, roadsides, and agricultural margins in tropical and subtropical regions.

Etymology

The genus name Leptochloa is derived from the Greek words leptos, meaning “thin,” and chloa, meaning “grass,” a reference to the plant’s characteristically slender inflorescences.

Distribution

Leptochloa species are distributed across tropical and warm-temperate regions of Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Individual species range from the south-central United States and Mesoamerica through the Caribbean and South America (south to Paraguay and Argentina), with additional species in Southeast Asia (Thailand, Borneo, Malaysia, Cambodia, Java) and Australia.

Taxonomy Notes

The genus has undergone substantial revision: many species formerly placed in Leptochloa have been reassigned to related genera including Dinebra, Diplachne, Disakisperma, Eragrostis, Eleusine, Bouteloua, Chloris, Enteropogon, and others. As of October 2024, Plants of the World Online recognises 14 accepted species. GBIF places the genus in family Poaceae, order Poales, phylum Tracheophyta, kingdom Plantae.
