Maihuenia is a small genus of cushion-forming cacti in the family Cactaceae, order Caryophyllales. It is the sole genus of the subfamily Maihuenioideae, which is the smallest subfamily within Cactaceae. The genus contains only two accepted species: Maihuenia patagonica and Maihuenia poeppigii.

Both species form low, dense cushions and produce a mucilaginous sap, a trait unusual within the cactus family and considered a primitive characteristic linking Maihuenia to ancestral lineages of Cactaceae. Unlike most cacti, Maihuenia retains persistent, succulent leaves alongside its spines, which is another feature regarded as basal within the family. The plants grow at high elevations in the Andes of Argentina and Chile, tolerating the cold, arid conditions of Patagonian and Andean steppe environments.

The subfamily Maihuenioideae, containing only this genus, occupies a phylogenetically significant position: molecular studies have placed it as sister to the remainder of the cacti, making Maihuenia a key genus for understanding the early evolution of the Cactaceae.

Etymology

The genus name Maihuenia is the Latinized form of maihuén, the local Chilean vernacular name historically applied to these cacti.

Distribution

Maihuenia species are restricted to high-elevation habitats in the Andes of Argentina and Chile, growing in the cold, arid conditions characteristic of Patagonian steppe and Andean puna zones.

Taxonomy Notes

Maihuenia is the sole genus of the subfamily Maihuenioideae (family Cactaceae, order Caryophyllales), the smallest subfamily within the Cactaceae. Its phylogenetic position has attracted significant interest: molecular analyses place it as sister to all other cacti, making it important for reconstructing the early evolutionary history of the family. The retention of persistent succulent leaves and mucilaginous tissues are considered primitive (plesiomorphic) traits within Cactaceae.
