Malcolmia Genus

Malcolmia is a genus of annual and perennial flowering plants belonging to the family Brassicaceae (the mustard or cabbage family), within the order Brassicales. The genus comprises 11 accepted species, distributed primarily across the Mediterranean basin — encompassing North Africa and southeastern Europe — and extending eastward through Western Asia, the Transcaucasus, Central Asia, and as far as Pakistan.

Plants in the genus are typically small, slender-stemmed herbs producing four-petalled flowers in shades of pink, purple, lilac, or white, characteristic of the broader Brassicaceae family. Several species are cultivated ornamentally for their abundant, sweetly fragrant blossoms. The most widely grown is Malcolmia maritima, commonly known as Virginia stock, which is a popular fast-flowering annual in temperate gardens valued for its ease of cultivation and early bloom season.
