Mitreola, commonly known as hornpod, is a genus of small herbaceous perennial flowering plants belonging to the family Loganiaceae, within the order Gentianales. The genus comprises approximately 13 species distributed across tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the southeastern United States.

Plants in this genus are generally compact, typically reaching no more than about 30 cm (12 inches) in height. They bear sessile leaves — leaves that attach directly to the stem without a petiole — and produce small white flowers. The modest stature and simple floral structure are characteristic of the group across its wide geographic range.

Taxonomically, Mitreola has undergone revision: several species formerly placed in the related genus Cynoctonum have been transferred into Mitreola, reflecting closer examination of morphological and phylogenetic relationships within Loganiaceae.

Distribution

Mitreola species occur across a broad pantropical to warm-temperate range, encompassing parts of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the southeastern United States. They inhabit tropical, subtropical, and temperate zones within this range.

Taxonomy Notes

Mitreola is placed in the family Loganiaceae (order Gentianales). Several species formerly assigned to the genus Cynoctonum have been reclassified into Mitreola following morphological and phylogenetic reassessment.
