Papilionanthe (abbreviated Ple.) is a small genus of epiphytic orchids in the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales. The genus was erected by Schlechter and comprises roughly ten species distributed across Southeast Asia, southern China, and the Indian subcontinent — from the Himalayas, Nepal, Bhutan, and northeastern India, through Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Malay Peninsula, to Borneo, Sumatra, and the Lesser Sunda Islands (Bali, Lombok, Timor), with one widespread species (P. teres) naturalized as far as Fiji and the Caroline Islands.

A distinctive feature of the genus is the highly reduced, succulent, terete (cylindrical, pencil-like) leaves, a xeromorphic adaptation to bright, seasonally dry habitats that gives the plants a superficially cactus-like appearance resembling Curio repens. The genus is perhaps best known horticulturally for Papilionanthe teres and its hybrid with Vanda coerulea, which gave rise to the famous Vanda 'Miss Joaquim' — the national flower of Singapore — though that hybrid is sometimes placed in Vanda in broader generic treatments.

Species in this genus are typically epiphytes of lowland to montane forest margins. They produce showy flowers, often in shades of white, pink, or purple, on pendant racemes.

Distribution

Papilionanthe is native to a broad arc spanning the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia: from the Himalayan foothills of Nepal, Bhutan, and Assam, through Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Malay Peninsula, to Borneo, Sumatra, Sri Lanka, and the Lesser Sunda Islands (Bali, Lombok, Timor). Papilionanthe teres, the most widespread species, has been naturalized beyond its native range in Fiji and the Caroline Islands.

Taxonomy Notes

The genus Papilionanthe was separated from Vanda by Schlechter on the basis of the distinctive terete leaves and other morphological characters. Generic boundaries between Papilionanthe, Vanda, and related genera remain a subject of discussion among orchid systematists; GBIF currently accepts 4 species under the genus, while Wikipedia lists approximately 10, reflecting ongoing taxonomic revision.
