Patrinia is a genus of roughly 14 herbaceous perennial plants belonging to the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae), in the order Dipsacales. Plants grow as compact clumps with thin, erect stems that carry few leaves, topped by open, branched inflorescences bearing masses of small yellow or, less commonly, white flowers. The genus is distributed across grassy mountain habitats spanning a wide arc of eastern Asia — from eastern European Russia and Siberia through China, Korea, and Japan. Several species are cultivated as ornamental garden plants, valued for their airy, long-lasting flower heads and tolerance of rocky or poor soils. The genus was historically placed in the family Valerianaceae, but molecular studies led to its transfer into the expanded Caprifoliaceae.
Distribution
Patrinia species grow natively in grassy mountain habitats stretching from eastern European Russia and Siberia through China, Korea, and Japan. The approximately 14 accepted species collectively span this broad arc of temperate eastern Asia, with individual species often restricted to specific mountain or steppe zones.
Taxonomy Notes
Patrinia was long placed in the family Valerianaceae, which molecular phylogenetic studies have shown to be embedded within Caprifoliaceae (honeysuckle family). It is now accepted within Caprifoliaceae, order Dipsacales. GBIF recognises 13 accepted descendants; Wikipedia lists 14 accepted species.
