
Picradeniopsis is a small genus of flowering plants in the daisy family (Asteraceae), comprising eight accepted species distributed across the Americas. The genus ranges from the central and southeastern United States and Mexico in the north to Peru, northwestern Argentina, and Uruguay in the south. Species in this genus were formerly placed in the genus Bahia before being reclassified into Picradeniopsis by B.G. Baldwin and others; the current species epithets retain their original authors in parentheses. Members of the genus are herbaceous to subshrubby plants typical of the tribe Helenieae within Asteraceae, bearing the composite flower heads characteristic of the daisy family. Notable members include Picradeniopsis oppositifolia, a widespread North American prairie species, Picradeniopsis absinthifolia, and Picradeniopsis bigelovii.
Distribution
Picradeniopsis is native to the Americas. Its northern range covers the central and southeastern United States south into Mexico, while a separate southern range extends from Peru through northwestern Argentina to Uruguay.
Taxonomy Notes
The genus was segregated from Bahia (sensu lato) and reclassified as Picradeniopsis; species authorities such as B.G. Baldwin, Rydb., and A.Gray are credited in the accepted combinations. GBIF places the genus in the family Asteraceae; order-level placement is not recorded in the GBIF backbone for this entry.
