Spermacoce, commonly known as false buttonweed, is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae (the coffee family), order Gentianales. The genus comprises roughly 275–290 species of annual or perennial herbs and small shrubs distributed throughout the tropics and subtropics of the world. Its greatest diversity is found in the Americas, with secondary centres of diversity in Africa, Australia, and Asia; many species have also become widely naturalized far beyond their native ranges.

Plants in the genus are characterized by small- to medium-sized, four-lobed flowers clustered into dense, head-like (capitate) inflorescences, often seated in the leaf axils. The corolla is variable in colour — frequently white, but ranging through all shades of blue, pink, and maroon; some Australian species have a brightly coloured calyx that makes them particularly ornamental. The fruit is typically a two-seeded capsule, though it may take the form of a schizocarp or nut in certain species.

Spermacoce belongs to the tribe Spermacoceae within Rubiaceae, a family that also contains well-known genera such as Coffea (coffee) and Cinchona (quinine). The genus name itself is sometimes treated in a broad or narrow sense depending on taxonomic authority, and species limits have historically been contentious. Well-known members include S. exilis (Pacific false buttonweed), S. confusa (river false buttonweed), S. ovalifolia (broadleaf false buttonweed), and S. tenuior (slender false buttonweed), the last of which ranges from the southern United States to Bolivia and has naturalized on several oceanic islands including the Galápagos.

Distribution

Spermacoce is a pantropical genus with its highest species diversity in the Americas (from the southern United States through the Caribbean and into South America), followed by Africa, Australia, and Asia. Many species are vigorous colonizers and have become widely naturalized in regions far outside their native ranges — for example, S. exilis and S. verticillata are now established across Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and various oceanic islands.

Taxonomy Notes

The genus Spermacoce belongs to the tribe Spermacoceae, family Rubiaceae, order Gentianales. Species delimitation within the genus has historically been complex; the group has been treated both broadly (absorbing segregate genera) and narrowly, and total species counts vary between roughly 275 and 290 depending on the authority. GBIF places the genus in class Magnoliopsida (dicotyledons), phylum Tracheophyta.

Ecology

Species of Spermacoce typically occur in disturbed habitats — roadsides, field margins, open grasslands, and forest edges — across tropical and subtropical lowlands. Several species are considered weedy and have spread well beyond their native ranges via agricultural and horticultural pathways. The genus exhibits both annual and perennial life strategies, and individual species show considerable tolerance for different soil types and moisture regimes.
