Aechmea fasciata aka Urnplant

Taxonomy

Aechmea fasciata, also known as the silver vase or urn plant, is a species of flowering plant in the Bromeliaceae family. It is native to Brazil and is highly decorative due to its leathery, xiphoid striped green leaves with silvery stripes. This ornamental plant-epiphyte is often cultivated as a houseplant, but its juice can irritate the skin despite its weak toxicity. The colorful blooms in the center of the plant are actually made up of pink 'bracts,' and the plant only produces small purple 'true' flowers just before it dies. In the wild, A. fasciata collects rainwater in the center of its bracts, so it is recommended to leave a small pool of water for them to drink during watering. Despite its popularity in cultivation, A. fasciata still grows in the alpine forests of South and Central America, growing on tree branches and cracks of the rocks and embankments.

How to care for Urnplant

Difficulty

Urnplant requires a bit more attention and knowledge to thrive, making it a suitable plant for those with some gardening experience.

Water

Urnplant does best in dry soil and should only be watered sparingly.

Soil

Urnplant loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Urnplant prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Dormancy

During the cold period, it is common for Urnplant to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more during this period.

Toxicity

Urnplant is not known to cause harm to humans or pets.

Humidity

Urnplant enjoys dry environments, but misting the plant or providing extra humidity can create an environment for harmful fungi to thrive on the leaves.

Fertilizer

The growth of Urnplant is not rapid and it doesn't necessitate any extra fertilization. By replacing its potting soil once a year, it should receive ample nutrition. It is important to note that plants obtain their energy from the sun's rays, not from fertilizers.

Region of origin

Urnplant’s native range is Central, South America, and the Caribbean.

Flower

If you provide your Urnplant with adequate amounts of sunlight and water, it will bloom.
