Anthurium superbum aka Anthurium Superbum

Taxonomy

Anthurium superbum is an unusual plant belonging to the family Araceae, endemic to Ecuador, and threatened by habitat loss. It prefers subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests with a sufficient level of humidity. Today, it is a popular houseplant and a nice addition to a tropical garden due to its long, dark green leaves with pointed edges and purple undersides. The leaves are rosette-shaped and can grow up to 10 in (25 cm) long and 3 in (7 cm) wide, covering each other and preventing pests from accessing the plant. This species is easily identified by its pink flowers that have a pleasant smell and can grow up to 12 in (30 cm) long. Anthurium superbum blooms all year round and with proper care, this process takes place for more than a month. To thrive, this relatively rare houseplant needs regular watering, abundant sunlight, and soil that is well-draining. Repotting each time it doubles in size should negate the need for added fertilizers.

How to care for Anthurium Superbum

Difficulty

Anthurium Superbum presents a moderate level of care, which allows plant enthusiasts with some experience to expand their skills and knowledge.

Water

Anthurium Superbum should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Anthurium Superbum loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Dormancy

During the wintertime, it's common for Anthurium Superbum to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more.

Toxicity

The toxicity level of this plant has not been officially confirmed by Ploi. If there is a possibility of ingestion of plant material with an uncertain toxicity by you, a family member, or a pet, it is advisable to seek the assistance of a medical professional.

Humidity

No additional humidity is required for the Anthurium Superbum. Plants take in most of their water through their roots, not their leaves, therefore, watering the soil is the most effective way to supply humidity to your plants.

Fertilizer

Repotting the Anthurium Superbum is necessary either when it has doubled in size or once every year, whichever happens first. With fresh potting soil replenished annually, the plant will receive all the necessary nutrients, rendering the use of fertilizer unnecessary. Keep in mind that the source of a plant's energy is the sun, not fertilizer.

Region of origin

Anthurium Superbum’s native range is the Americas.
