Archontophoenix alexandrae aka Alexandra Palm

Taxonomy

Archontophoenix alexandrae, also known as the Alexandra palm, king palm, Northern Bangalow palm, or feather palm, is a tall and fast-growing palm tree native to Queensland, Australia. Its name was given in honor of Princess Alexandra of Denmark, although it is often mistakenly called the Alexander palm. This palm species features a slender trunk that swells at the base and is marked with leaf scars. Its impressive arching leaves can reach up to 4 meters in length and are adorned with numerous narrow leaflets. These leaflets are pale green or purple-flushed on the upper surface and grey or silver on the underside. During the summer, the tree produces cream to yellow flowers that bloom in large sprays, followed by pinkish-red fruit. The king palm is not only found in Queensland but can also be spotted in subtropical and tropical regions worldwide, including the southernmost parts of the United States. Although it requires some additional care, when properly maintained, the king palm can create a striking visual impact. Overall, caring for a king palm involves a few essential practices to ensure its health and beauty.

How to care for Alexandra Palm

Difficulty

Alexandra Palm requires a bit more attention and knowledge to thrive, making it a suitable plant for those with some gardening experience.

Water

Alexandra Palm should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Lighting

Alexandra Palm requires abundant, bright and direct light. Placing it less than one foot from a window is the best way to make sure the plant receives enough light to survive and thrive. Depending on your region, however, the current weather can affect the placement of the plant in your home. For example, in some areas the sun may be too direct and intense, so it's best to place it farther away from the window. You may also need to adjust your placement according to the season as the sunlight can change intensity over the course of the year. If you live in a region with significant temperature fluctuations, such as a desert, you may need to place the plant a bit farther away from the window to avoid extreme heat or cold. With some care and attention, your Alexandra Palm will be sure to bring you many years of beauty and enjoyment.
