Ardisia elliptica aka Shoebutton
Taxonomy
Ardisia elliptica, also known as shoebutton ardisia, duck's eye, and coralberry, is an evergreen tree native to the west coast of India, Sri Lanka, Indochina, Malaysia, Indonesia, and New Guinea. It is a prolific reproducer and has become a successful invasive species in other tropical locations where it has been introduced as a garden ornamental. This ornamental shrub has been widely introduced around the tropics and sub-tropics from its native Southeast Asia, and has since escaped from cultivation, becoming a particular problem weed in southern Florida and the Everglades, Hawaii, and it has naturalized in Australia, Puerto Rico, and likely in other countries. It is one of the world's 100 worst invasive alien species and has been banned in some areas, although its continued availability via ornamental plant dealers means further introduction may be likely. Birds and some mammals are the main local dispersal agents via consumption of the edible berries. A. elliptica is shade tolerant and can form monotypic stands in moist areas, displacing native vegetation. Despite its invasive nature, shoebutton is a popular houseplant that is easy to grow and needs regular watering to thrive. It does best in abundant sunlight and should be less than 3 feet from a window.
Common names
Shoebutton, Shoe Button Ardisia, Shoebutton ArdisiaHow to care for Shoebutton
Difficulty
Shoebutton presents a moderate level of care, which allows plant enthusiasts with some experience to expand their skills and knowledge.
Water
Shoebutton should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
Soil
Shoebutton loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.
Lighting
To ensure optimal growth, the Shoebutton prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.
Toxicity
Ploi does not possess verified information regarding the toxicity of this particular plant. In the event that you, a member of your family, or a pet ingests plant material with an unclear toxicity level, it is highly recommended to seek the advice of a medical professional.
Humidity
The Shoebutton does not necessitate supplementary humidity. Plants primarily absorb water through their roots, rather than their leaves. Hence, the most effective way to supply humidity to your plants is by watering the soil.
Fertilizer
The Shoebutton should be transferred to a new pot once it has increased in size two-fold, or on an annual basis, whichever occurs earlier. Replacing the soil with fresh potting soil containing all the necessary nutrients, is sufficient enough to support the growth of the plant, thus avoiding the need to use fertilizer. It's important to note that plants derive their energy from the sun and not fertilizer.
Region of origin
Shoebutton’s native range is Tropical Americas, Asia, Australia, and Pacific Islands.
